One of the newest products to hit the As Seen on TV scene is Pajama Jeans. There has been a lot of buzz about the Pajama Jeans because they are pajama bottom fabric pants that look like they are a pair of jeans. Most people would ague that it would be silly to wear these on a regular basis, which we are inclined to agree with. However, what about those days when you are feeling sick and want to go out and get your mail, or run to the grocery store? To live a healthy, organic and green way of life a great idea is to plant your own garden to grow veggies, herbs, etc.  With your own personal garden, not only are you able to eat fresh, organic foods straight from your yard, but you are contributing to cleaner air.  However, for many people who live in an apartment or condo they may not have the room to actually plant their own garden.

There is a fantastic option that enables anyone anywhere to organically grow fruits and vegetables at home.  You may have seen the product called the Topsy Turvy on TV; it is an upside-down hanging tomato planter that is ideal for not only those who don’t have room for a garden at home, but also for those who do.  The Topsy Turvy can actually be a better and more efficient way to grow tomatoes than planting them in the ground. Jack LaLanne, who may best known these days for his immensely successful infomercial product the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer, passed away at the age of 96 this past Sunday.  Jack LaLanne has been heralded as the founder of modern fitness.  Beginning in 1936 when he opened his own gym complete with a juice bar and health food shop, Jack never stopped preaching about the importance of a good diet and plenty of exercise for people of all ages.

Jack explained he grew up as an unhealthy and unhappy kid, but that his life was forever changed at 15 after sitting in on a speech about proper diet.  From then on Jack made it his mission to be as healthy and fit as possible and to help others do the same.

His life is marked by innumerous accomplishments including licensing his chain of gyms to Bally’s, launching a successful nationwide TV show and swimming from Alcatraz to Fisherman’s wharf handcuffed and shackled tugging a 1,000 lb boat at the age of 60! Just to name a few.  Jack will be remembered for his devotion to good health and his mission of helping people help themselves.  He is survived by his wife Elaine, son Jon and daughter Yvonne.

At the end of November 2010, Weight Watchers announced their biggest change in 13 years, the Points Plus program. Points Plus is a remake of the points formula that puts a higher focus on “friendly nutrition” with the hopes that it will lead to more effective weight maintenance for the millions of Weight Watchers members and all future members.

This new plan is not just another fancy name or marketing gimmick. The essence of the Points Plus plan is to dramatically change the way the whole point formulation works, which currently assigns different amounts of points to foods based on their carb, fiber, protein and fat content.

For those of you who love Fruit, you will love the new system as it encourages the consumption of fruits due to their health benefits. On the other hand “simple carbohydrates” like pasta and potatoes will be assigned negative values due to their high calorie and insulin spiking properties.

In general protein and fiber are positively valued (much like before) while carbs and fats will be negatively values. In the hopes that people will be eating more healthy choices as opposed to simply eating less food but choosing the less-healthy options.

Not only is the new Weight Watchers Point Plus program a better formulation change but also a better approach to healthy eating and food valuation.

This recipe is a fantastic and healthy alternative to traditional pizza.  It’s also great if you’re on a diet because it fulfills your pizza craving while being much lower in calories.

Feta & Hummus Pita Bread Pizza Recipe

Tools:

• Slap Chop (link & pic)
• Ingredients:
• 2 Whole Wheat Pita Bread Rounds
• 8 ounces of hummus (regular or whatever kind you like)
• ½ cup crumbled feta cheese
• ½ cup tomato (chopped)
• ½ cup cucumber (chopped)
• 1/8 cup sliced red onion
• 1 tbsp olive oil

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Once heated place the plain pitas on ungreased baking sheet and bake for 3-5 minutes (until it’s lightly toasted).

Take pitas out of the oven.  Spread hummus evenly over each pita leaving a little bit of plain pita showing around the edges.  Coat the edges of each pita lightly with olive oil.  Crumble feta evenly over each pita and bake for 7 minutes (until thoroughly cooked).  Remove from oven and top with tomato, onion and cucumber, and enjoy!

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, losing weight or eating healthier is usually right at the top of the many people’s lists…but most of their resolve is usually gone by Valentine’s Day. The secret is to make diet resolutions that are easy to follow, and don’t try to do too much at one time.

1. Drink more water

You’ve heard this one before, but it’s worth repeating. Drinking six to eight pints of water a day will keep you feeling full, and thus
less hungry, and flush out impurities from your system. The latter is especially important if you’ve been “bad” during the holiday season, ingesting more fat, sugar and chemicals than usual.

2. Limit your salt intake

You know too much salt can affect your heart health and other body functions, but it also helps retain fluids, which results in weight gain. Lose the salt, and those “fluid-weight” pounds will disappear.

3. Eat healthier meals

You knew this was coming! A good diet plan includes fresh fruit and vegetables, not processed foods that are high in salt, fat, sugar, and preservatives. If you’re not able to plan healthy meals yourself, plenty of help is available from resources like Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig and Medifast; these companies do the planning for you, and deliver healthy meals right to you.

Above all else, be serious if you make diet resolutions for the New Year. Write down your eating goals and post them where you’ll be reminded of them often—perhaps on your refrigerator—and then stick to them!
